Presidential election campaigns

Can you effectively build your network by working on a presidential campaign?  If so, how do you go about volunteering?  What's the best job to do?  In the past, when I've volunteered, I've mostly been asked to lick stamps and make phone calls. That doesn't seem like the best way to impress a campaign or is it?
