Back to school

I practiced family law for several years before having children.  I haven't worked in seven years which is a long time to be away from the legal field.  Unfortunately, I haven't really kept up with changes in my field and frankly I'm not all that fired up about going back into that line of work.  Recently, I've been thinking about getting a PhD in psychology and setting up shop as a licensed therapist.  I think my family law background will help me in my new career and give me a good credential for those looking for a family therapist.  My problem is that I'm not sure where to begin.  I have a major university in my city and I'm willing to go back to school, but I'm not exactly sure where to start.  A friend of mine told me that I should first study for the GRE exam since I'll have to take that in order to get into graduate school.  I was hoping that my law degree would help me skip this requirement. Has anyone done this before?  As an attorney, I guess I'm just a little naturally resistant to making myself look stupid, so I haven't called the university yet.  I'm trying to get enough information on my own before I go that route.  Thanks!
